Very simple reason that many drummers would choose Heavy Metal Rock Drumming over Intricate Jazz Drumming? The answer. No hard complex patterns to worry about. Just like Fast Food at the take out window. You choose Rock Heavy metal drumming or Fusion drumming you sell yourself short. Make it easy dont spend money on good drums just buy garbage can lids for cymbals go to the grocers and get empty boxes Cardboard Prefered and there you have it. You can Pound and sound like the trash man . But one thing you must do is get tatoos and rings in your ears . Dont worry about studying serious drumming skills. Just play very loud and you will be a great noise maker.

Messed around with umpteen drum styles heavy metal drummers and so called new wave drummers. Guess What? I discovered Buddy Rich on video and there is no stopping trying to figure out how this man could play so great? I dig Buddy Rich so much because of his sound his ideas and mainly because every bar and every measure of music he plays is difficult and amazing. If you listen to the drummers today and whats happening today its pretty much the same old noise over and over and the same old cymbals playing easy mickey mouse patterns. Buddy Rich set the standards of great drumming by playing his style with no one being able to duplicate him. The way you evaluate the Buddy Rich Greatness is really quite simple. Watch any one of his videos and then try to compare Buddy Rich to whats out there today? No one can come close to his superior drumming. Buddy Rich

There is a difference between "best" and "influential". This is the same linguistic conundrum that Rolling Stone had in their "Greatest Guitar Players of All Time" where Eddie Van Halen ended up 70th out of 100, several orders of magnitude behind Kurt effin' Cobain, Jack friggin' White and Keith "where's the heroin" Richards.

Buddy Rich is by far the most "influential" when you ask most of the other drummers on the list provided. Every drummer, including the amazing but very arrogant Tony Williams would admit had Buddy decided to be a plumber... they'd probably also be plumbers.

The year is 2010 and nothing has really happened to the drum world? You still have guys getting behind drum kits grip sticking playing so loud and sloppy and surrounding them selves with tons of tom toms and double bass drums and forty to fity cymbals and even a gong behind them? Lots of drums and layers and layers of noise. So whats a serious drummer to do? Turn back and listen to the Master Drummer Buddy Rich. So here we go again back to the basics and back to the Best Drummer who ever Drew Breath. Buddy Rich. over said and done Buddy Rich.

I see lots of Buddy Rich fans here...so am I. Now, take everything Buddy has, then add ambidextrous ability (including reverse traditional grips),wicked double bass chops, photographic memory sight reading at the highest level, perfect pitch vocal ability, world-class arranging/composing ability for ANY contemporary platform good enough to teach at ANY prestigious music schools - yes, he could've easily arranged any chart for Buddy's band or Phil Collins or Steely Dan or Clapton or Michael Jackson or ANYBODY...and you get a sick, twisted, freak called CLYDE CONNOR.
