The Worlds Best Drummer List
By kevin | July 19, 2008
FIrstly, a huge thankyou to everyone who contributed by commenting on my last post where I asked the Question “Who is the best drummer in the world?”
Obviously this is a really tough choice to make, as there are so many great players who we all look up to as drummers and percussionists. Many of you gave more than five – and thats fine… I did my best to include every drummer mentioned, and I tried to create a ranking system that would include the wishes of those people who ranked drummers in order and those who just named some without ranking them.
I never intended it to be a very scientific study – I really just wanted to get a list of drummers who are influential to everyone at the moment. All I did was tally up the number of votes that each drummer got and Ive ordered the list that way.
So… Drum roll please…. here is the list:

Buddy Rich
Steve Gadd
Vinnie Colaiuta

There are people in this list who I’ve never heard of, and for that I’m really grateful. I’m going to make it my mission over the next couple of months to find out something about each one of these players and listen to some of their music.
This is just a starting point, and there is some obvious weaknesses in the way I did this informal survey, so what I’m going to do is create some polls for this website which will give us some more helpful information a bit more scientifically.
The first polls are going to be..
Who is the most influential drum set player of all time?
Who is the best classical percussionist of the current era?
Who is the greatest conga player/percussionist of all time?
I’m going to start with this list as the nominations – and you can nominate anyone to be included at any time, by simply leaving a comment on the appropriate posting. These posts will be up in a few days – once I’ve figured out the new software I’ve installed to do it!

I think Chad Sexton should be on that list. He is an amazing drummer with his own style. He did drum corps before picking up the drum set, so with his corps experience is incorporates a lot of rudiment in his playing and is basically a human metronome. I think he is definitely more talented than Travis Barker. Check him out on Youtube or something.

yeah there is a lot of incredible drummers that don’t apear in this list… but anyways… its a good point for u kevin!
July 20th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Hey dudes, Art Tatum is a piano player!
I guess the list kind of came down to most popular rather than best in choices like Chris Adler (who’s a fine drummer, don’t get me wrong.)
Also I thought world’s best drummer meant they had to be alive which is why I didn’t have Buddy Rich, Tony Williams and Jeff Porcaro in my list.
July 21st, 2008 at 12:17 am
I think Danny Heifitz should also be on the list – (he works with mr. Bungle and Secret cheifs 3 and others) His technical ability and versatility of musical styles is amazing
July 21st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
No Tony Allen?
July 30th, 2008 at 10:04 am

Josh Freese is the new master of rock drumming. He is the perfect example of skill, stylistic diversity, and taste. There are few modern drummers who even compare. Any practicing drummer be it jazz, rock, pop, metal, ect. could take a lesson from him. He has worked with everyone. Check his wikipedia.
February 9th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
How about Carter Beauford???
February 10th, 2009 at 11:03 am
You missed Sivamani. India’s best drummer. Check out his work.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
How could you possibly create any list of teh who’s who of drumming and not include the hands-down best drummer of all time?
From the time he joined the band in 1967 at the age of 17, Keith Moon of the Who immediately changed the world of drumming forever. Never before, or since, has any single drummer even come close to producing the full, complete sound of Moon. Sure, Townshend wrote all of that great music, and Daltry was the “face” of the Who, but it was Moon’s driving drums, and Entwistle’s phenomenal bass playing the gave the Who their unique sound. Even the great Bonham, King of the Off-Beat, didn’t even come close to generating the amount of sound Moon did with seemingly little effort. Keith Moon was without a doubt the best drummer to ever live. And as with anyone of that magnitude, his life was tragically cut short, and his contribution to the music world wasn’t recognized until long after his passing.
Compiling any list of the world’s best drummers absolutely must include Moon, if not at the top of the list, surely in the top 5
BTW – Where’s Ringo’s son Zack in your list?
February 18th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Correction… Moon joined the Who in 1964, not ’67…
Fat finger mash many keys… my deepest apologies
February 20th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Lars Ulrich should be on this list. I agree with the top few, but he should be in your top ten.
February 21st, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Questlove.
Plays for hip-hop band The Roots, best drummer I’ve heard.
March 3rd, 2009 at 6:08 am

March 11th, 2009 at 1:25 am
Gavin Harrison is one of the cleanest most pure drummers you will ever listen to.
March 16th, 2009 at 1:16 am
I’m not a drummer! I’m a bass player in a Judas Priest tribute band. I am a huge fan of heavy metal music. There are many drummer’s I respect and love. Bill Ward, Mickey Dee, Nick Menza, and the list goes on. I’ve always been a supporter of metal musicians. However, yesterday I had the opportunity to see a DVD of Mr. Buddy Rich. I was amazed at his fluid ability to play things that I’ve never seen another drummer do before. He has the technical ability of anyone I’ve ever heard. He also makes it look so easy. If you asked me two days ago I’d say Bill Ward was the best drummer in the world. Sorry Bill, Buddy Rich has got my vote. Bill Ward is still my favorite drummer! Metal is my favorite music. Having said that, Buddy Rich in my opinion is the best drummer ever to walk the earth.
March 24th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Ah… Sorry :S
But where is Jon Hiseman??? He is very missing, should be on the top
April 13th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
What an incredible bullshit it is I’m reading here. Why do people keep on discussing who’s the best drummer, bass player, guitarist etc? How can one judge this? It’s obvious that most people reflect their personal taste in this forum. Which appears to be mainly rock. As if only rock drummers are the best drummers of all time.
My trousers drop to my feet when I read that Ringo should be on this list……. Ringo for fuck’s sake!! The other Beatles had to hire other drummers to play his parts in some cases because he couldn’t handle his parts.
And who came up with Art Tatum? Brilliant!!
“Danny Cary is the greatest drummer on the planet.” Who the fuck is Danny Cary and how did you measure his abilities?
I think before commenting here, most of you people should broaden their minds by listening to other kinds of music too.
Look for instance in the list on the right: “Who is the most influential drum set player of all time?” I think you will find most of the finest drummers of all time in this list……..
Have fun.
April 17th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Where Dave Mackintosh???
April 28th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
HEY YOU GUYS FORGOT ABOUT ALEX GONZALES FROM THE BAND MANA

May 24th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
travis barker should be at the top!!!
June 15th, 2009 at 5:29 am
DAVE LOMBARDO…Drum world called him “the godfather of the bass drums” he would crush alot of these drummers..he should be ahead of T.Barker Buddy Rich is the greatest!!!!
June 15th, 2009 at 5:38 am
Lombardo’s bass drumming alone has such a great sound and is so unique..he is the only drummer i can recognize, i hear a song..if its Lombardo i usually know it. He has played with slayer, grip inc., testament, apocalyptica, movie sound tracks, he’s filled in for METALLICA. this guy can play. he should be in the top 10.
June 24th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Travis Barker is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my 5 top:
Travis Barker**
Neil peart
joey jordison
bonham
lars ulrich
to say that lars ulrich and travis barker are even close to the top of a constantly changing list is so stupid it hurts..
they’re not even in the top 5,000 amazing drummers that walk this planet…
i realize its just a matter of opinion so ill give you mine…
ROMAIN GOULAN of all drummers ive heard up to this point in time in my opinion is far superior in style, rythmic technical ability. and choice
of all said drummers on the long list above, and if youve read this much than you definately need to checkout ROMAIN GOULAN of NECROPAHGIST….
anyways good list but most are over rated…
June 25th, 2009 at 12:56 am
what about aaron gillespie from underoath
June 29th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
OK, it is obvious that whomever compiled this list, must have just done a google search for drummers. Where are Jon Bonham and Carter Beauford? Not to mention countless others, but these two should be in the top ten. And how about a ranking system, not just an alphabetized list. There must be some criteria that was used to determine the greatness of these drummers, or did you just take their names from another list?
July 5th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
I think Thomas Pridgen of Mars Volta deserves a place on this list.
July 21st, 2009 at 7:40 pm
No ?uestlove
Go listen to The Roots and tell me he isn’t one of the greatest drummers.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Wake up people!!!! Where Jimmy Sullivan???????
August 15th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
THE GREATEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD IS DESMOND KENSEL for High On Fire.
August 21st, 2009 at 5:42 pm
This list is severly incomplete without Tomas Haake, drummer for Swedish Technical metal band MESHUGGAH. this guy is incredible in every sense of the word. The band comes up with some of the most technical rhythms and patterns I’ve ever heard, and Haake manages to follow the brutally technical rhythms in sync with his feet and one hand, while still playing in 4/4 with his other hand at the same time!!! He is robotic, has true seperation of right and left brain above and beyond any other drummer I have ever heard, and I’ve been a semi pro musicians for 15 years. tomas Haake should be on this list. Any one that is unsure of what I am talking about, go listen to the MESHUGGAH song, “Soul Burn” and you will see what I mean.
August 21st, 2009 at 5:44 pm
also should be on the list, Flo Mounier and Carter Beauford
August 25th, 2009 at 12:59 am
joey jordison should be in the top of the list
August 26th, 2009 at 4:07 am

chester thompson
klaus weiss
ginger baker
tony allen
August 26th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Dude what about Tommy Lee?!?! Dude did a drum solo while it was spining a circle in the air!
August 31st, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Carter Beauford is not listed, so this list can’t be serious, Bonham either so it really can’t be serious.
September 5th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
How in the world are carter beauford and jon fishman not on this list when joke drummers like travis barker made the list straight bullshit
September 17th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Bill Bruford,Lars Ulrich,Keith Moon and Ginger Baker need to be added, but kudos for including lesser known (to non-drummers) Vinnie Colaiuta and Trilok Gurtu
September 22nd, 2009 at 8:18 pm
Neil Peart is diffinately among the top percussionist ever. Choose to listen to a song such as Zanadoo, By-Tor The Snow Dog, Tom Sawyer, Jacobs Ladder, etc. Then tune out the guitar’s, voices, keybords and listen to the hundreds of different sounds that Neil creates within the song. He surrounds himself with not just a drum set, but with many percussion instruments which he can strike with accuracy at any beat and pace he chooses – better yet, view a video that focuses on his performance. He uses Chimes, tubular bells, symbols, gongs, bells, and many other instruments that go beyond your typical drum set. Check out his performance – it will probably convince you that he is and will always be the greatest percussionist of all TIME!
September 30th, 2009 at 6:18 am

October 2nd, 2009 at 4:42 am

October 25th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
I can see Buddy Rich, but, no Carter Beauford? Are u kidding me. You need to go to youtube and check this man out… His solos are second to none.
October 26th, 2009 at 11:46 am
i have researched alot of the drummers from the top 18 drummers on this list and casey grillo from the band kamelot beats them all, thouge you cant judge a drummer, by talent because it is realy hard to determin who is beter, it realy relies on opinion, though metal is my genre of music and out of the metal drumers casey grillo is the best
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
How can u make a drummer list without including Neil Pert (if that’s how u spell it), Joey Jordison, Keith Moon, and many more. This is a poor scientific study and all the people who voted r just retarded by far.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:06 am
Marvin Smitty Smith, Tony Allen (was mentioned), Ginger Baker, Tony Williams to name a few…
November 5th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Where is Carter Beauford??
November 10th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

Terry Bosio
December 18th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Well I had a chance to go to a old vinyl record shop today and finally picked up some old vinyl of Buddy Rich playing? Thats it. I do not want to ever hear another rock heavy metal drummer ever again. Buddy Rich is the ticket for me. First and foremost this Buddy Rich guy is incredible he makes all the noise makers I have wasted my time on look and sound like midgets. So now I see why all serious drummers pick Buddy Rich over everyone out there. Its Buddy Rich all the way for me. Buddy Rich
January 1st, 2010 at 4:11 am
wat about clyve bunker?!?!?!?!?!
January 21st, 2010 at 4:00 pm
What do you call a drummer without a girlfriend? Homeless! Ha, Stephen (drummer) might just be illiterate though. Peart is fourth on the list. Moon was influential and fun to watch but his timing was awful. Lombardo should be high on the list as his skill, timing and technical ability are indisputable. He has also developed a style of double kick that is simply the template that style. Having said all that… Buddy Rich is still the best drummer ever recorded.
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:39 pm
wow no mention of ian paice, moon, bonham, and howdy wright (sorry bout the last one)
January 28th, 2010 at 1:38 am
In l970 spent time working in a drum shop in Toronto and saw all the big names in drums come in and get their percussion equipment repaired and i had the great opportunity to get drum clinics established. we booked all the great names and sold tons of drums because of these clinics. i can tell you the one drummer who knocked the socks off of all the rock drummers was Buddy Rich. Ginger Baker and John Bonham were there but when Buddy Rich came and did a clinic we were all spell bound. he made Ginger and John and all the others sound like midgets. Buddy Rich was the Beginning and End of Drumming. Buddy Rich the answer to Complete Excelence behind a drum kit. Buddy Rich
January 31st, 2010 at 12:52 am
I say with full truth hands down the best drummer is jimmy the rev sullivan of avenged sevenfold
February 3rd, 2010 at 12:45 am
Being a professional Drummer myself thought I’d weigh in my two cents worth.
1. Gene Krupa
2. Buddy Rich
3. Lionel Hampton (Yes he is known for Vibes)
4. Don Hensley
5. Phil Collins
I grade them on true technical ability and having been a moving force in the music business.

Old time folks seem boring because they talk in the past tense and I like a lot of people brush them off as being old hat and living in the past? And I might add I was completely wrong during my campus days at the university. Circled around John Bonham and Keith Moon and Charlie Watts I thought that was the drumming heroes of the day? Oh Man was I wrong. Buddy Rich Big Band played a one night stand at our campus. That was it. No Drummer Repeat No Drummer could come close to Buddy Rich or attempt to play complex drum solos like this guy. Was There Seen him live in person and watched him up close live in person. That did it for me. Move over Rock and Rollers and Heavy Metal drummers. Its Over Buddy Rich was the man. Buddy Rich
March 12th, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Eastman School of Music had this musical course that talked about how to develop into a great musician and how to make an audience appreciate your mastery of your particular instrument. so after hours of lectures and classrooms filled with teachers telling you how to play this roll or how to play a drum improvisation solo that would fit the musical ensemble a fellow student got mad and said cut the chase. he brought in his own video of buddy rich playing in rochester new york doing a show called at the top. everyone in the class looked intently. after the pro said any questions???? One student got up and said forget all these text books and lectures it is just plain and simple. Buddy Rich is the answer to any drummer. Buddy Rich is the measuring stick. Just burn all the drum books and proper way of holding the sticks. Just skip it. Buddy Rich is the name of the Course. Buddy Rich
March 20th, 2010 at 12:33 am
Something cool happened to me back in the mid seventies. We were playing in a marching unit in New Orleans and we had a decent dixie land jazz unit that played in the heart of the city. We were gigging in the afternoon and this little guy wearing shades comes up and marches besides me and says man what the hell you playing? This little guy marches besides me and takes my sticks and plays this fantastic drum cadence. Guys in my unit go nuts digging what he is playing???? He does this incredible jazz drum cadence with lighting speed hands? All of a sudden I hear this guy in my band say Hey Man thats Buddy Rich. Later that night I saw him play in his own Buddy Rich Big Band with him the Star Drummer playing behind his set. he played so dynamic clean and precise. That was it. I said its over why waste my time listening to any one else? So I became a Buddy Rich fanatic. Every record Every tape Every Comact Disc Every Video . Its Buddy Rich and thats it only Buddy Rich
March 26th, 2010 at 7:17 pm
Got into this Buddy Rich groove now and its really all about Buddy Rich. U Tube has some great bits of Buddy Playing with his own Buddy Rich Big Band and all of the clips Buddy did in later years are a symbol of the Master Drummer and by the way Buddy Rich was the Master Drummer. Now I had to go back and dig some of his older material so I did and stumbled upon this Buddy Rich at Play Boy After Dark circa l961 and just goes to prove to you that the Master Buddy Rich was doing the greatest of all greatest drumming way back in l96l. No drummer out there past present or future could play drums that dynamic and precise. Buddy Rich the Master Drummer. None Better. Buddy Rich
April 17th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Holy crap. Aaron Gillespie us not in this list? He is the man! Number 1 all the way
April 27th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
Wow……. hmm don’t think that list is truly accurate along with lot of responses of all these new age drummers, joey is not that great of a drummer….. he has no true difficulty in is songs (which his style should) and if u ever see slipknot live u will see he cant keep time worth crap, and on top of that his fills are not that complex and his so called “solo” is not even a true solo, he take small parts from old songs and peaces them together. and hello i think this list left out one of the worlds most influential drummers to today’s drummers….. Keith Moon, and he also comes from one of the biggest bands in music history. and true i agree with frank saying buddy rick is a drumming god but there are plenty of drummers from history that are right up along side him. and at least 100% of those drummers up there are main street drummers…. if you rilly want to see drumming at its beast and barest look up Elvin Jones, high energy and amazing technique. if all today drummers actually took the time to break down there solos and fills you would find them direct derivatives of buddy rich and Elvin Jones solos and fills. sounds like a bunch of wineing i know but its the truth.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
and one more thing… not hating on Neil but one of the reasons he is #4 is cuz he has a big ass kit… take the kit away and put him on a 5 piece i would love to see how good he is then.
May 1st, 2010 at 2:39 pm
Circa 1959 New York City. We were involved in making it a point to go and see the Best of Musicians that played. Now grant you back then you could not use an amp for a crutch or special lighting to make you look good as a musician. Buddy Rich was in Manhatten and he had a new Big Band playing and our group of musicians knew and respected Buddy no matter where or when or what kind of musical group he had. Anyway He knew we were in the audience and he let loose. I can still remember him playing Caravan and he did this drum solo that was simple incredible. He did some fast single stroke rolls that were a blur but what he did as far as melody on that drum solo was like when he did Old man River at the Paramount in l949. Whether you love Buddy Rich or hate him there was one thing that he did that no other drummer today could accomplish. He set the record straight he made it perfectly clear that no drummer could copy him or play his exactness and clean immaculate drumming with ideas that no drummer could complicate. Sure there are Clones out there who pretend to be like Buddy Rich but they fall way short. They just dont have those ideas and excitement. Another thing about Buddy that I admired throughout his career that he was never taught drum rudiments or courses in drumming. You heard Buddy Rich Live you saw him play live you got one million percent pure Buddy Rich. I just yawn today and fall asleep when I see and hear guys get behind drum outfits and try to play something. Its really nothing but boredom and over played. Give me Buddy Rich any time. Buddy Rich
June 8th, 2010 at 11:55 pm
I think Ian S Leighton sould get a mention, he’s not the best drummer in the world but his timeing is second to non, I should know I sleep with him every night. Debs P.S. should I swap him for a bass player ?
June 10th, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Ever go to high school and you had a group of fellow students who thought they knew it all and what they said was the rule?? That happened to me in Chicago Illinois when I grew up learning to play a set of drums. Learning I said. Any way the big drummer of the day was Keith Moon. O K I said Keith Moon was the GOD. Oh what a joke??? a big big big joke? Buddy Rich Greatest Drummer to Draw Breath came to Chicago and played there during a one night stand. my parents told me that Buddy Rich was a old established drummer from the big band era that could knock ceilings down and make peoples heads turn around twice maybe even three times. I knew my parents would not lie to me. So I spent some time and money and went to see and hear this Buddy Rich Guy. Thats it. Case over . Schools Out. Buddy Rich made Keith Moon look like a small child behind a drum kit. Buddy Rich was then and forever after my drum hero. So forget about comparisons and Rock and Amps and roadies and stage crews and special mikes and special lighting. Buddy Rich need no props. Buddy Rich the Absolute God of Drumming Buddy Rich.
